Containerized refrigeration units for associated petroleum gas cooling

ZAVKOM-ENGINEERING LLC designs and supplies containerized refrigeration units (chillers) for cooling associated petroleum gas on a turnkey basis — from pre-design calculations to commissioning, with adaptation to specific APG parameters and field conditions.

Associated petroleum gas (APG), extracted together with oil at fields, typically contains significant amounts of heavy hydrocarbons, moisture and mechanical impurities. For further utilization, transportation, preparation for compression or cryogenic processing, APG must be cooled to specified temperatures.

One of the most efficient solutions for autonomous field facilities is a containerized refrigeration unit (chiller) — a compact modular unit placed in a standard container block and fully ready for operation on site.

A containerized refrigeration unit for associated petroleum gas cooling is designed for:

  • condensation of heavy hydrocarbons (C3+, gas condensate, water);
  • reduction of gas volume and pressure before further processing;
  • prevention of overheating of equipment and flares;
  • preparation of gas for compression, transportation or utilization.

Typical APG cooling modes:

  • Pre-cooling (to 0…–20 °C)
  • Medium-temperature cooling (–20…–60 °C)
  • Deep cooling (–80…–120 °C)
  • Cryogenic cooling (down to –160 °C)
  • Auxiliary cooling modes

A chiller for associated petroleum gas cooling within such a system acts as a key element of the cooling circuit: it maintains the specified temperature range and ensures stable operation of the unit under various operating conditions.

Composition of the container module:

  1. refrigeration machine
    (compressor-condenser unit);
  2. heat exchange equipment:
    • evaporators
    • shell-and-tube or plate heat exchangers
    • gas coolers
  3. separators and demisters;
  4. pumps and piping system;
  5. water/glycol cooling circuit system;
  6. instrumentation and automation cabinets;
  7. container ventilation system;
  8. fire safety system;
  9. electrical equipment;
  10. noise insulation and thermal insulation of the container.

Principle of operation of a containerized APG chiller:

  1. Incoming APG enters the module and undergoes preliminary coarse separation
  2. The flow is directed tothe evaporator (gas cooler), where cooling to the required temperature occurs due to refrigerant boiling.
  3. As the temperatured ecreases, heavy hydrocarbons and moisture condense, are separated in the separator and removed as stable gas condensate.
  4. The cooled and dehydrated APG is supplied to further technological operations — compression, transportation, low-temperature separation, stabilization or preparation for liquefaction.
  5. The refrigeration circuit operates according to the standard compression–condensation–expansion–evaporation cycle, ensuring the required cooling capacity.
