On June 22, 1941, the Great Patriotic War began — one of the most tragic pages in the history of our country. On that day, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union without a declaration of war. The war lasted 1,418 days and claimed the lives of over 27 million Soviet citizens — every eighth resident of the country perished. Millions of families lost their loved ones, hundreds of cities and tens of thousands of villages were wiped off the face of the earth. This sacrifice of the people stopped Nazism and saved the world from enslavement.
Since 1996, June 22 has been officially observed in Russia as the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow. On this day, state flags are lowered across the country, and entertainment events and television programs are cancelled.
Today, as ideologies against which our grandfathers and great-grandfathers fought are being revived, preserving historical truth becomes a form of resistance against a common enemy. Attempts to rewrite the history of the war, whitewash Nazism, and downplay the decisive contribution of the Soviet people to the Victory make the memory of June 22, 1941, not just a tribute to the past, but an act of defending the future.
