In the biotechnology industry, water is not just a technical medium but a key component determining the efficiency of fermentation processes, the viability of microorganisms, and the purity of the final product. The production of amino acids, enzymes, organic acids, bioethanol, and feed proteins requires strict control of the physicochemical and microbiological parameters of the aquatic environment.

Water treatment for various areas of biotechnological production has its own strict specifics:

  • production of amino acids, organic acids and enzymes — requires precise mineral balance of the environment and removal of toxic heavy metals and chlorine for a smooth fermentation process
  • microbial synthesis (feed proteins, biopolymers) — the priority is strict microbiological purity, which excludes the entry of foreign microflora into the bioreactor that competes with the producer strain
  • deep processing of plant materials (bioethanol, starches, syrups) — demineralized and softened water is required to protect heat exchange, evaporation equipment and CIP-cleaning circuits from salt deposits
  • alcohol production (brewing, spirits, winemaking) — impeccable organoleptic properties (taste, absence of off-odors, and absolute clarity) are critical, as water is the basis of the finished product. This requires thorough iron removal, complete dechlorination (to avoid phenolic flavors during fermentation), and strict control of salt composition

Water intake for the needs of biotechnological complexes can be carried out from various sources:

  • municipal water supply mains
  • artesian wells
  • reservoirs and lakes
  • rivers

Untreated aquatic environments often contain excessive amounts of hardness salts, colloidal suspensions, chlorides, and also have high levels of total organic carbon (TOC) and pathogenic microflora.

1. Iron removal and water clarification unit

Removes suspended matter and heavy metals (iron, manganese) toxic to cultivated strains.

  • Aerator:oxidizes dissolved iron and removes excess gases
  • Pressure filter:retains oxidized iron and impurities, protecting subsequent purification stages from clogging

The unit is responsible for removing free chlorine, which is harmful to any living cultures in fermenters and destroys polyamide reverse osmosis membranes.

3. Water softening unit (reduction of alkalinity and hardness in Na, H-cationization mode)

The Na/H cation exchange unit removes hardness salts from water and reduces its alkalinity using ion exchange technology. This system reliably protects pipes, boilers, and heat exchangers from scale and corrosion, helping to reduce energy costs and produce high-quality water for drinking or industrial purposes.

4. Water inhibition unit for salt deposits

This chemical protection method prevents the formation of hard mineral deposits, such as sulfates and carbonates, on work surfaces. The process is achieved by automatically introducing precisely measured small doses of reagents (antiscalants or inhibitors) into the aqueous medium.
